We are very happy to begin the “Good News”
report on Camel Caravan. Once the Rotary Club of Dubai has completed
the accounting and bookkeeping for the charity auction gala we’ll
have a final report – in the meantime here are some of the facts
and figures:
- The Live Auction on May 22nd raised 4,700,000 Dirhams
or more than $1,280,000 for our Charities !
- The highest bid was AED 350,000 for “Emirates Banker
II”, our British Banker who was “camel knapped”
in February and then recreated by the teachers at Latifa College.
- “Dubai Dream” our mirrored beauty brought
in a bid of AED 250,000
- “Sporting Camel – Cricket” & “The
Green Charm” both raised bids of AED 220,000 each.
- All of the other camels raised hefty bids as well and
we are happy to report that many of the camels will remain on the
streets of Dubai for your enjoyment.
- Camel Caravan has raised almost 5 million Dirhams for
our charities overall.
- Our public art project has paid over AED 250,000 to local
artists in honorariums – a great boost for the arts community.
- 70 artists from 30 different countries painted our camels
– truly a Dubai story.
- 14 school participated in the program, many painting murals
for the Camel Barn and others painting life size camels for their
schools.
- All in, over 3,000 children were involved in Camel Caravan.
- The Best News of all is that with the proceeds from the
auction, our charities will be able to reach some of their goals
or start many much needed projects in their programs. Congratulations
to all !
Overall, the facts behind the Camel Caravan point to an incredibly
multicultural, diverse effort that has engaged schools, community
groups, businesses, the government sector, and the many residents
and tourists who have enjoyed seeing these artworks roaming the
streets of our city.
